Mini Valentine Cakes

We were going to my mom's on Sunday to celebrate Valentine's Day. So Saturday night I had an idea to try making some mini heart shaped cakes using some cookie cutters I had. I wasn't quite sure if it was going to work but figured I would take a shot at it. It was also a good time to try out my new decorating kit I got from my mom for Christmas.

The cookie cutters.

Ever since I made my daughter's rainbow cake back in November for her birthday, I've kinda been a little obsessed with "coloring" the cake batter. And of course for Valentine's Day I wanted to make a red cake. It really ended up being a dark pink, good enough though.

Once the batter was mixed & dye added, I put the cookie cutters into a cake pan & added the batter. Remember not to add to much batter because I made that mistake the first time & they were overflowing.

Once you take them out of the oven, let them cool for a few, gently poke them out of the cutters, then put in the fridge to cool for about 10 minutes. Putting them in the fridge makes it much easier when you are ready to frost them!

Then frost & decorate the way you like! 1 box of cake mix gave me about 15 mini cakes. Here are how mine came out! Pretty good if I do say so myself!

I'm thinking for St. Patrick's Day either mini shamrock cakes Or 1 big shamrock cake.

  1. Allison, these are too cute! I can't wait to see your shamrock cakes! I cheated and went to the bakery this year, LOL! I have been so busy trying to get caught-up from my surgery.

I hope you had a great Valentine's Day!

  3. So cute, I love them! If I had made them, I would have done a sheet cake and then used the cutters to cut heart shapes out of it. I never would have thought to bake the cakes *in* the cookie cutters! You are a genius. :D
